A visual field test — also called perimetry — is a diagnostic exam that maps the full extent of your vision, including your central and peripheral (side) vision , to detect any areas of vision loss, blind spots, or scotomas you may not notice in daily life.
Your visual field is the total area you can see when your eyes are focused on a single central point. A healthy visual field extends roughly 90 degrees to each side, 60 degrees up, and 75 degrees downward. When disease or nerve damage begins affecting your vision, these edges are often the first to go — and the loss can be so gradual that you may not notice it until it becomes severe.
