What a Visual
Field Test
Measures
Your visual field is the full area your eye can see while focused on a single point — including everything in your side and peripheral vision. A visual field test maps this area precisely, identifying where vision is strong and where gaps or loss exist.
The test is painless, requires no eye drops, and typically takes 15 to 30 minutes. Each eye is tested separately. You'll sit at the machine, focus on a central target, and respond to light stimuli appearing at various points across your field of view.

What a Visual Field
Test Measures
Your visual field is the full area your eye can see when focused on a single point — including everything in your peripheral and side vision. Many conditions that damage this field progress silently , with no obvious symptoms until significant loss has already occurred. A visual field test maps exactly where your vision is strong and where gaps exist — giving your eye doctor a precise, early picture of your ocular health.
How the Test Works- 1
You sit at the perimetry machine and focus on a fixed central target. No eye drops are required and the test is completely painless.
- 2
Light stimuli flash at different points across your field of view. You press a button each time you detect a flash — each eye is tested separately.
- 3
The machine generates a computerized map of your full visual field, showing our doctors exactly where vision loss exists and how it compares to your baseline over time.
Tracks peripheral vision loss caused by elevated intraocular pressure — the most common use of visual field testing in ongoing eye care.
Identifies the size, shape, and location of scotomas — which can indicate retinal damage, optic nerve disease, or neurological conditions.
Visual field defects can reflect stroke, brain tumors, or other neurological disorders affecting the visual pathway beyond the eye itself.
Monitors peripheral vision loss from conditions including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and retinal detachment risk.
Assesses how droopy eyelids or ptosis may be limiting your usable visual field — particularly relevant for daily tasks like driving.
State-of-the-Art Equipment
at Every Location
Superior Eye Care uses advanced automated perimetry technology across all three locations — the same diagnostic standard used by ophthalmologists and glaucoma specialists nationwide. Every visual field test produces a precise, computerized map of your ocular function that our doctors review with you directly.
Our visual field testing uses automated perimetry
— the gold standard for
mapping peripheral and central vision across the full visual field. The Humphrey
Visual Field Analyzer produces a detailed threshold map that shows sensitivity
levels at every tested point, giving our eye doctors a thorough, quantified
picture of your vision health.
Results are reviewed immediately after testing. If findings indicate a condition
requiring further evaluation or specialist referral, your doctor will discuss
next steps clearly and directly — no waiting weeks for answers.
Measures light sensitivity at dozens of points across your visual field, identifying areas of reduced function before symptoms appear.
Results are stored and compared against previous tests over time — essential for monitoring glaucoma progression and treatment response.
Advanced analysis software flags abnormal patterns in your results — distinguishing true defects from testing variability with clinical precision.
Full reports available for specialist referrals, insurance documentation, or second opinions — your data travels with you.
Whether you visit our Woodlands, Willowbrook, or Conroe office, your visual field test uses the same advanced technology and is reviewed by the same experienced eye care team — ensuring consistent, reliable results at every visit.
Patients Who Benefit Most from
Visual Field Testing
Visual field testing isn't only for patients with known eye conditions. Many people who need it most have no symptoms yet — which is exactly the point. If any of the following applies to you or your family, talk to your eye doctor about scheduling this test at your next visit.
Glaucoma Patients & Suspects
If you have elevated intraocular pressure, a family history of glaucoma, or have already been diagnosed, visual field testing is the primary tool for monitoring peripheral vision loss and tracking whether treatment is working. Early detection here directly affects long-term vision outcomes.
Adults 40 and Over
The risk of glaucoma, retinal disease, and other conditions that affect the visual field increases significantly after 40. Routine visual field testing establishes a baseline — so if your vision changes, your doctor has historical data to compare against and can identify problems earlier when treatment options are widest.
Children & Pediatric Patients
Peripheral vision deficits in children often go unnoticed because children adapt without realizing anything is wrong. Pediatric visual field screening can surface issues that affect reading, learning, and sports performance well before a standard vision test would catch them. We offer this service for patients aged 5 and up.
Patients with Neurological History
Stroke, brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, and other neurological conditions can produce characteristic visual field defects. If you have a history of any neurological event or condition, your eye doctor may recommend visual field testing as part of ongoing monitoring — even if your vision appears normal day to day.
Diabetic Eye Care Patients
Diabetic retinopathy can affect peripheral vision before central vision is impacted. For patients managing diabetes, visual field testing complements retinal imaging as part of a complete diabetic eye care protocol — giving your doctor the full picture of how diabetes is affecting the health of your eyes.
Patients with Ptosis or Eyelid Conditions
Droopy eyelids can block your upper visual field without you fully realising the extent of the limitation. A visual field test documents the functional impact of ptosis — which is often required by insurance providers before approving corrective eyelid surgery. Our doctors can guide you through this process from exam to referral.
Book a comprehensive eye exam and your doctor will determine which diagnostic tests are appropriate for your age, health history, and vision needs.
Connected to Your
Complete Eye Health Picture
Visual field testing is one part of the broader diagnostic picture we build for every patient at Superior Eye Care. Depending on your results, your doctor may connect your visual field findings to other services — giving you a thorough, complete view of your eye health in a single visit.
Comprehensive Eye Exam
Not sure which tests you need? A comprehensive eye exam is the starting point. Your doctor evaluates your full eye health and recommends the right diagnostic services — including visual field testing — based on your age, risk factors, and vision history.

Retinal imaging and visual field testing are frequently used together — particularly for glaucoma monitoring, diabetic eye care, and macular degeneration screening. Together they give your doctor a complete picture of both the structure and function of your eye.
Learn about retinal imaging → Treatment ServiceDry Eye Treatment
Severe dry eye symptoms can affect visual clarity and temporarily alter visual field test results. If you experience dryness, irritation, or fluctuating vision, our doctors can evaluate and treat dry eye as part of your overall eye care plan before or alongside diagnostic testing.

Whether your visit starts with a comprehensive eye exam, retinal imaging, or a standalone visual field test, our doctors coordinate your care across services so nothing gets missed. Patients managing conditions like glaucoma, myopia, or dry eye symptoms benefit most from this integrated approach to eye care — all under one roof at Superior Eye Care.

Visual Field Test —
Common Questions
Have a question not covered here? Call the office nearest to you or book a comprehensive exam — your doctor will advise on the right diagnostic tests for your specific situation.
Book an Appointment →How often should patients schedule a visual field test?
For most patients, once annually is appropriate as part of a routine comprehensive eye exam. If you have been diagnosed with glaucoma, have elevated intraocular pressure, or have a documented history of peripheral vision loss, your doctor may recommend testing every six months to monitor changes more closely. Your optometrist will advise the right frequency based on your specific risk profile and eye health history.
Is visual field testing available for children?
Yes. Superior Eye Care offers visual field testing for patients aged 5 and up at all three locations. Peripheral vision deficits in children are often missed because children adapt without realising something is wrong. Early pediatric visual field screening can surface issues affecting learning, reading, and sports performance well before a standard vision test would detect them. If you are concerned about your child's vision, book a comprehensive eye exam and your doctor will determine whether this test is appropriate.
Can new patients book a visual field test directly?
Yes. New patients are welcome at all three locations — The Woodlands, Willowbrook, and Conroe. You can book online using the location-specific links on this page, or call the office closest to you. If you are unsure whether a standalone visual field test is what you need, book a comprehensive eye exam instead and your doctor will recommend the right diagnostic services based on your age, health history, and vision needs.
Does Superior Eye Care accept insurance for visual field testing?
Visual field testing is covered by many medical insurance plans , particularly when ordered for the diagnosis or management of conditions such as glaucoma, retinal disease, or neurological vision loss. Coverage varies by plan and provider. Contact your nearest Superior Eye Care office before your appointment and our team will help clarify your coverage and confirm whether a referral or pre-authorisation is needed.
Does the test require eye drops or dilation?
No. A visual field test is completely non-invasive and does not require eye drops, dilation, or any preparation. You sit at the perimetry machine, focus on a central target, and respond to light stimuli — the entire process is painless and typically takes 15 to 30 minutes per visit. You can drive yourself to and from the appointment without any concern about temporary vision effects from dilation.
Is visual field testing required before eyelid surgery?
In many cases, yes. Insurance providers typically require documented visual field test results before approving ptosis correction or functional blepharoplasty — to confirm that the droopy eyelid is meaningfully limiting your usable visual field. Our doctors can perform the required test, document the results in the format insurers need, and guide you through the pre-authorisation process from your first exam through to specialist referral.
