Why It Matters

Your Child's Eye Health Cannot Wait

Most children never complain about vision problems — not because they don't have them, but because they don't know what clear vision is supposed to feel like. Routine pediatric eye care is one of the most important health checks your child will have. Early detection changes outcomes.

80%
of Learning Is Visual
A child's visual system processes up to 80% of everything they learn in the classroom. Undetected eye conditions directly slow reading, focus, and academic progress.
1 in 4
Children Has an Undetected Eye Condition
Most vision problems in children go unnoticed until a comprehensive eye exam reveals them. School screenings miss up to 75% of significant eye problems.
Age 7
The Critical Window for Vision Correction
After age 7, the brain's visual pathways are largely set. Conditions like amblyopia and strabismus are far more treatable when diagnosed before this milestone.
Lazy Eye and Crossed Eyes Are Treatable
Amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed eyes) respond well to treatment — but only when caught early. A pediatric eye exam can detect misalignment of the eyes and poor visual acuity before they become permanent, protecting your child's depth perception and long-term eyesight.
Myopia Is Growing Fast in Children
Nearsightedness and farsightedness are among the most common refractive errors found in children today. Early detection through a pediatric eye exam allows for timely vision correction — whether through eyeglasses or contact lenses — and can reduce the risk of vision loss later in life.
School Screenings Are Not Enough
A quick school vision screening cannot replace a full children's eye exam. Only a licensed optometrist can properly examine the retina, test ocular pressure, detect astigmatism, and diagnose conditions like early glaucoma or cataract that standard screenings will never catch.
Infants Need Eye Exams Too
Eye health does not start at school age. Premature infants and babies as young as 6 months old can develop eye conditions that affect how their vision develops. Our pediatric eye doctor in Houston is trained to examine and diagnose eye problems in patients of every age — starting from infancy.

American Optometric Association (AOA) Guidelines: Children should have their eyes examined at 6 months, age 3, before first grade, and every year thereafter. Our eye care team at Superior Eye Care follows these standards across all three Houston-area locations.

AOA-Recommended Milestones

When Should Your Child Have Their Eyes Examined?

The American Optometric Association sets clear guidelines for children's eye exams based on age and developmental stage. Vision problems caught at the right milestone are far easier to treat — and far less likely to affect your child's learning, confidence, and long-term eye health.

Pre-School
Age 3
By age 3, children can communicate well enough for a more detailed vision assessment. This exam checks visual acuity in each eye, detects lazy eye (amblyopia), and identifies crossed eyes or squint before the visual system becomes fully established.
School Ready
Before First Grade
Before your child begins first grade, a full pediatric eye exam is essential. Reading, writing, and board work all place new demands on a child's vision system. Undetected refractive errors — like myopia, astigmatism, or farsightedness — can make schoolwork difficult and frustrating.
Annual
Every Year After
Once your child starts school, annual eye exams are recommended by the AOA every year without exception. Children's vision changes quickly — particularly during growth years. Yearly eye and vision checks ensure prescriptions stay current and that any new conditions are caught early.
Does My Child Need a Referral?
No referral is needed to book a pediatric eye exam at any of our three locations in The Woodlands, Willowbrook, or Conroe. Our optometrist is a direct-access provider — simply book online or call your nearest eye clinic and we will take care of the rest. We serve patients from Houston to Katy and beyond.
What If My Child Already Had a School Screening?
School vision screenings check only basic distance acuity and miss the majority of eye conditions children actually have. A comprehensive pediatric eye exam at our eye clinic goes far deeper — testing focusing ability, eye coordination, color vision, depth perception, and the health of the retina and surrounding structures.
What We Check

Eye Conditions We Detect in Children

A pediatric eye exam at Superior Eye Care goes far beyond checking whether your child can read the chart. Our eye doctors examine the full health of your child's visual system — detecting, diagnosing, and managing a wide range of conditions that affect children at every age.

Amblyopia
Lazy Eye
Amblyopia occurs when one eye develops weaker vision than the other, causing the brain to favour one eye. It is the most common cause of vision impairment in children and responds best to treatment when detected early through a pediatric eye exam.
Strabismus
Crossed Eyes
Strabismus is a misalignment of the eyes where one or both eyes turn inward, outward, upward, or downward. It affects depth perception and can lead to amblyopia if untreated. Our pediatric eye doctors diagnose strabismus and coordinate the right vision therapy or correction plan.
Myopia
Nearsightedness
Myopia causes distant objects to appear blurry while close objects remain clear. It is one of the fastest-growing eye conditions in children and can worsen rapidly through adolescence. Early detection and the right vision correction — eyeglasses or contact lenses — can slow its progression.
Hyperopia
Farsightedness
Farsighted children struggle to see objects up close clearly, making reading and writing tiring and frustrating. Because young children can compensate temporarily, farsightedness often goes unnoticed without a proper eye exam. Left uncorrected, it can lead to eye strain and headaches affecting schoolwork.
Astigmatism
Astigmatism
Astigmatism is a refractive error caused by an irregularly shaped cornea or lens, causing blurred or distorted vision at all distances. It is extremely common in children and highly correctable with eyeglasses or contact lenses once accurately diagnosed through a comprehensive eye exam.
IOP / Glaucoma
Glaucoma & Eye Pressure
Though less common in children, elevated intraocular pressure and early-onset glaucoma can occur and cause permanent vision loss without symptoms. Our eye clinic screens for elevated ocular pressure during every pediatric eye exam, ensuring no silent eye condition goes undetected.
Pediatric Cataract
Cataract in Children
Cataracts are not exclusive to adults. Congenital or pediatric cataracts can develop in infants and young children, clouding the lens and blocking normal visual development. Early detection through a comprehensive pediatric eye exam is critical for preserving long-term vision and optimal visual development.
Retinal Health
Retina & Ocular Health
Our pediatric eye exam includes a thorough assessment of the retina and internal ocular structures using cutting-edge diagnostic tools. This is especially important for premature infants, children with a family history of eye disease, or those who have had eye injuries that may affect long-term visual health.
Not Sure What's Affecting Your Child's Vision?
You don't need to know the diagnosis before booking. Our pediatric eye doctors will conduct a full eye and vision assessment, identify any eye condition present, and explain the findings clearly — along with every available option for treatment and vision correction. We provide expert pediatric eye care services for children of all ages across Houston, The Woodlands, Willowbrook, and Conroe, TX.

The Exam Process

What to Expect During a Pediatric Eye Exam

We know that bringing a child to any healthcare appointment takes trust. Our pediatric eye exam is designed to be thorough, calm, and child-friendly — giving parents clear answers and giving children a positive experience from the moment they arrive at any of our Houston-area eye care locations.

01
Patient History and Vision Concerns
Your child's exam begins with a review of their personal and family eye health history. Our optometrist will ask about any vision concerns you or your child have noticed — including difficulty reading, squinting, frequent headaches, eye rubbing, or performance issues in school. This step helps us focus the exam on what matters most for your child's vision care needs.
02
Visual Acuity Testing
We measure how clearly your child sees at various distances using age-appropriate charts and tools. For younger children and infants who cannot yet read letters, we use picture-based tests and preferential looking techniques that allow us to accurately assess visual acuity without requiring a verbal response from your child.
03
Eye Alignment and Movement Assessment
Our eye doctor evaluates how well both eyes work together and move as a team. This step identifies strabismus (misalignment of the eyes), crossed eyes, or tracking problems that can interfere with reading, depth perception, and learning. Early detection here can prevent amblyopia from developing or progressing.
04
Refraction — Checking for Refractive Errors
Using a retinoscope and trial lenses, our optometrist determines the exact prescription your child needs — if any. This step identifies myopia, farsightedness, and astigmatism. For young children, we may use eye drops to relax the eye muscles and get the most accurate reading. The process is painless and takes only a few minutes.
05
Eye Health Evaluation
We examine the internal and external structures of each eye — including the retina, optic nerve, lens, and cornea — using a slit lamp and ophthalmoscope. This step screens for eye conditions that have no early symptoms, including early glaucoma, cataract, and retinal abnormalities that could affect your child's long-term visual health.
06
Intraocular Pressure Test
We screen for elevated eye pressure using a quick, non-invasive intraocular pressure (IOP) test. High ocular pressure can be an early indicator of glaucoma — even in children — and is completely undetectable without clinical testing. This test takes seconds and requires no needles, no drops, and no discomfort for your child.
07
Discussion of Results and Recommendations
Once the exam is complete, our optometrist sits down with you to go through every finding in plain language. If a vision problem or eye condition is detected, we discuss all available options — including eyeglasses, contact lenses, vision therapy, or a referral to a specialist. You will leave with a clear understanding of your child's eye health and a plan that fits your family.
08
Follow-Up and Ongoing Eye Care Plan
Depending on your child's results, we will schedule a follow-up appointment or recommend a return visit aligned with AOA guidelines. Children with active conditions such as myopia, amblyopia, or strabismus typically need more frequent monitoring. Our goal is to provide continuous, consistent eye care for children from their first visit through adulthood.
45 to 60 Minutes
A full pediatric eye exam takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes. We never rush. Every child receives the time and attention they need.
Pain-Free and Non-Invasive
The exam involves no pain, no injections, and minimal discomfort. Eye drops may be used in some cases and will be explained to you in advance.
Parents Welcome Throughout
Parents or guardians are welcome to be present for the entire exam. We encourage your questions and make sure you understand every result before you leave.

Warning Signs

Signs Your Child May Have a Vision Problem

Children rarely say "I can't see clearly" — because they have no baseline to compare their vision against. These are the signs parents, teachers, and caregivers most commonly notice before a formal diagnosis. If your child shows any of these, a pediatric eye exam is the right next step.

Behavioural and Learning Signs
Avoiding reading or close work
Children with farsightedness or convergence problems often resist reading because it causes strain. If your child avoids books, puzzles, or drawing, vision may be the cause.
Falling behind in schoolwork
Poor performance in reading, writing, or copying from the board is one of the most common signs of an undetected vision problem affecting a child's ability to learn.
Short attention span during visual tasks
Children who struggle to see clearly fatigue quickly during tasks that require sustained visual focus. This is often mistaken for behavioural issues rather than an eye condition.
Losing their place while reading
Skipping lines, re-reading the same line, or using a finger to track words on a page can all indicate tracking problems, astigmatism, or an underlying refractive error requiring correction.
Difficulty with sports or depth perception
Trouble catching a ball, misjudging distances, or performing poorly in sports that require hand-eye coordination can be a sign of strabismus, amblyopia, or poor depth perception.
Physical and Visual Signs
Squinting or closing one eye
Squinting is one of the clearest signs that a child is trying to compensate for blurry vision. Closing one eye to focus — especially when watching TV or reading — may indicate myopia, astigmatism, or a misalignment of the eyes.
Frequent headaches or eye strain
Headaches at the end of a school day or during reading are a common sign that the eyes are working too hard to compensate for an uncorrected refractive error. This is highly treatable once the correct diagnosis is made.
Eyes turning in, out, or drifting
Visible misalignment of one or both eyes — whether constant or intermittent — is a sign of strabismus that requires prompt evaluation. Left untreated, it can lead to amblyopia and permanent loss of vision in the affected eye.
Sitting very close to screens or the board
Consistently moving closer to the TV, holding books very close to the face, or sitting at the front of the classroom to see the board are all classic signs of myopia (nearsightedness) that require an eye exam and vision correction.
Excessive eye rubbing or blinking
Frequent rubbing or blinking can indicate eye strain, dry eye, or an underlying vision problem causing the eyes to work harder than they should. In infants, it can also be associated with blocked tear ducts or early eye conditions needing attention.
Do Not Wait for a Failed School Screening
If your child shows any of these signs — or even if they do not — an annual pediatric eye exam is the only reliable way to protect their vision and eye health. Our eye doctors at Superior Eye Care serve children across Houston, The Woodlands, Willowbrook, and Conroe, TX. Book today and get answers the same visit.

Are Contact Lenses Right for Your Child?

Many parents are surprised to learn that contact lenses are a safe and effective option for children and teenagers. When fitted correctly by an experienced optometrist, contact lenses can dramatically improve a child's confidence, quality of life, and visual acuity — especially for active children involved in sport or outdoor activities.

At Superior Eye Care, we assess every child individually before recommending contact lenses. The right age for contact lenses is not a fixed number — it depends on your child's maturity, their ability to follow hygiene routines, and the specific eye condition being corrected. Our optometrist in Houston will discuss all options with you during the pediatric eye exam and recommend the most appropriate type of lens for your child's vision care needs.

For children with myopia, daily disposable soft contact lenses are often the most practical option — reducing the risk of eye infections and simplifying lens care. For children with astigmatism, toric lenses provide the precision correction that standard spherical lenses cannot. In some cases, our eye doctor may also discuss orthokeratology — specially designed lenses worn overnight to temporarily correct myopia — as part of a broader myopia management plan.

There is no universal minimum age for contact lenses. Research shows children as young as 8 to 11 years old can successfully wear and care for contact lenses when properly guided. Our optometrist will assess your child's readiness during their comprehensive eye exam.
Learn About Contact Lens Fitting
Daily Disposable Lenses
Daily disposable contact lenses are the safest and most convenient option for children. A fresh lens every day eliminates the risk of build-up, reduces infection risk, and removes the need for cleaning solutions — making them ideal for children who are new to contact lens wear.
Toric Lenses for Astigmatism
Children with astigmatism require toric contact lenses that correct the irregular curvature of the cornea. Our optometrist performs a detailed fitting to find the right toric lens for each child's prescription — providing clear, stable vision without the frame limitations of eyeglasses.
Myopia Management Lenses
For children with progressing myopia, specialised contact lenses — including multifocal soft lenses and orthokeratology lenses — can slow the progression of nearsightedness over time. Our pediatric eye doctor will discuss which myopia management option is appropriate based on your child's current prescription and overall eye health.
Safety, Hygiene, and Proper Fitting
Every child who is fitted for contact lenses at our eye clinic receives a complete fitting session, hygiene training, and a trial period to ensure comfort and confidence. We do not prescribe contact lenses without a full children's eye exam — safety and correct fit are non-negotiable for every patient we see.
