The Exam Process

How a Contact Lens Exam Differs from a Regular Eye Exam

A standard eye exam gives you an eyeglass prescription. A contact lens exam goes further — it includes precise measurements of your eye surface, a contact lens fitting, and a trial lens evaluation before your prescription is finalized.

Corneal Curvature & Eye Measurements Your optometrist maps the curve and diameter of your cornea using a keratometer or topographer — this determines the correct base curve and lens size for your eyes.
Tear Film & Dry Eye Evaluation Patients with dry eye often struggle with contact lens comfort. We assess tear film stability before recommending a lens type, reducing the chance of discomfort or complications.
Refractive Error & Lens Prescription We assess your vision correction needs — including astigmatism, presbyopia, or complex refractive errors — and build a contact lens prescription separate from your glasses Rx.
Trial Lens Fitting & In-Office Evaluation Before you leave, you try your lenses in the office. We check fit, comfort, and vision quality — and only confirm your final prescription when everything looks right.
Note: Most insurance plans bill the contact lens exam separately from your annual eye exam. Our team will verify your coverage before your appointment.

Lens Types We Fit

Contact Lens Options Available at Superior Eye Care

We fit a wide selection of contact lenses across all three locations. Your optometrist will recommend the right lens type based on your eyes, prescription, and lifestyle.

Astigmatism

Toric Contact Lenses

Toric lenses correct the uneven corneal curvature that causes astigmatism. They are weighted to stay in position throughout the day — giving you consistent, stable vision correction.

  • Corrects sphere and cylinder prescription
  • Stays aligned during movement
  • Available in daily and monthly wear
Presbyopia

Multifocal Contact Lenses

Multifocal lenses provide clear vision at near, intermediate, and distance ranges — eliminating the need for reading glasses. Ideal for patients over 40 with age-related vision changes.

  • Near and distance correction in one lens
  • Reduces need for reading glasses
  • Available from leading optical brands
Convenience

Daily & Disposable Contacts

Daily disposable lenses offer the most hygienic contact lens experience — a fresh pair every day with no cleaning required and a lower risk of eye infections.

  • No cleaning or storage needed
  • Lower risk of deposits and infections
  • Ideal for part-time or new wearers
Specialty

Gas Permeable & Specialty Lenses

Patients with irregular corneas, high prescriptions, or soft lens intolerance may benefit from rigid gas permeable or custom lenses. Our therapeutic optometrist evaluates each case individually.

  • Fits irregular corneas and complex Rx
  • Sharper optics than soft lenses
  • Custom-fitted for your eye shape

What Patients Say About Their Experience

4.8 · 300+ Google Reviews

"I came in for a contact lens exam after years of wearing glasses. The optometrist took time to explain every step — the corneal measurement, why my prescription was different for contacts, and which lens type would work best with my astigmatism. Left with trial lenses the same day. Incredibly smooth process."

Jessica M. The Woodlands · Google Review

"I have dry eye and was told by another clinic I wasn't a good candidate for contacts. The team here did a full tear film evaluation and recommended a lens specifically designed for dry eye patients. Three weeks in and my eyes feel completely comfortable. Wish I had come here sooner."

Robert T. Willowbrook · Google Review

"Booked a same-day appointment at the Conroe office and was seen within the hour. The doctor was thorough and patient — walked me through multifocal lens options since I've been struggling with near vision. The whole exam and fitting took about 45 minutes. Staff was friendly and the office was spotless."

Frequently Asked Questions About Contact Lens Exams

Yes — they are two separate clinical visits. A standard eye exam produces an eyeglass prescription. A contact lens exam includes additional steps: corneal curvature measurements, a tear film evaluation, a contact lens fitting, and a trial lens assessment before your final prescription is confirmed. Most insurance plans bill them separately, and both may be covered under your vision benefit.

Most patients with astigmatism can wear contact lenses successfully. We routinely fit toric lenses for astigmatism — these are specially designed to stay aligned on the eye throughout the day. During your exam, your optometrist will confirm whether toric lenses or another specialty lens type is the best match for your prescription and corneal shape.

Contact lens wearers should have a comprehensive eye exam at least once per year — even when vision has not changed. Annual exams allow your optometrist to verify your lens prescription, assess your corneal health, check for early signs of lens-related complications, and update your contact lens Rx if needed. Wearing lenses on an expired prescription increases the risk of discomfort and eye health issues.

Yes. New patients are welcome at all three locations — The Woodlands, Willowbrook, and Conroe. If you are a first-time contact lens wearer, your optometrist will complete both the comprehensive eye exam and the contact lens fitting in the same appointment where appropriate. No referral is needed. Book directly online using the location buttons on this page.

We accept most major vision insurance plans including VSP, EyeMed, and others. Coverage for contact lens exams varies by plan — some plans cover the fitting fee, others apply it toward a materials allowance. Our team will verify your benefits before your appointment so there are no surprises at checkout.

Same-day appointments are available at all three locations subject to availability. If you need to be seen quickly, call the office nearest you directly — our team will do their best to accommodate you. Online booking is also available 24/7 for the next available slot at The Woodlands, Willowbrook, or Conroe.
