Diabetic Retinopathy

What Diabetes Can Do to the Retina

Diabetic retinopathy can develop quietly when diabetes damages the tiny blood vessels inside the retina. A diabetic eye exam helps detect these changes early, before vision loss becomes permanent.

What Is Diabetic Retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease caused by prolonged high blood sugar damaging the tiny retinal blood vessels. These vessels may leak fluid, swell, close off, or trigger the growth of fragile new blood vessels.

In advanced cases, abnormal blood vessel growth can cause bleeding inside the eye, scar tissue, retinal traction, and even retinal detachment.

Important: Diabetic retinopathy often has no early symptoms. Blurry vision, dark spots, trouble seeing at night, or sudden vision changes may mean the disease has already progressed.

Stages of Diabetic Retinopathy

  • 1 Mild Nonproliferative Retinopathy Small areas of the retinal blood vessels begin to weaken or balloon.
  • 2 Moderate Nonproliferative Retinopathy More retinal blood vessels become damaged or blocked, reducing healthy blood flow.
  • 3 Severe Nonproliferative Retinopathy Larger areas of the retina may be deprived of blood supply, raising the risk of advanced disease.
  • 4 Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy The retina grows abnormal new blood vessels that can bleed and cause sudden vision loss.

How We Diagnose Diabetic Retinopathy

Diagnosing diabetic retinopathy starts with a comprehensive diabetic eye exam. Your optometrist evaluates the retina, blood vessels, macula, and optic nerve to look for swelling, leakage, bleeding, or subtle structural changes.

1

Dilated Retinal Exam

Eye drops widen the pupils so your doctor can get a clear, detailed view of the retina and optic nerve.

2

Optical Coherence Tomography

OCT captures cross-sectional images of the retina to detect swelling, fluid, and diabetic macular edema.

3

Retinal Imaging

Retinal imaging documents eye health over time, making it easier to compare changes at future annual diabetic eye exams.

Diabetic Eye Care + Early Detection

Diabetic Eye Care in Houston That Helps Protect Your Vision Before Symptoms Appear

Diabetes can affect the eyes quietly. Many patients feel that their vision is “fine” until retinal damage has already started. That is why diabetic eye care is not only about checking your glasses prescription — it is about protecting the retina, monitoring small blood vessel changes, and helping you stay ahead of diabetic retinopathy, macular swelling, glaucoma risk, and long-term vision loss.

The Patient Story

The danger with diabetic eye disease is that it often waits silently.

A patient may drive, read, work, and go through daily life without noticing anything wrong. But behind the scenes, high blood sugar and high blood pressure can begin damaging the tiny blood vessels inside the retina.

At Superior Eye Care, our goal is to catch those changes early. We use comprehensive diabetic eye exams, retinal imaging, and careful monitoring to help identify diabetic retinopathy before it becomes a vision-threatening emergency.

When needed, we coordinate with your primary care physician, endocrinologist, or ophthalmology specialist so your eye health fits into your complete diabetes care plan.

Coordinated Diabetes Care

We can work alongside your primary care physician or endocrinologist to support your overall diabetes management and retinal health.

Retinal Health Monitoring

We look for retinal bleeding, swelling, leaking blood vessels, macular changes, and early signs of diabetic retinopathy.

Treatment Guidance When Needed

If diabetic retinopathy progresses, care may involve closer monitoring, injections, laser treatment, or referral to an ophthalmologist.

Risk Factor Education

We discuss the role of glucose control, blood pressure, and regular follow-up visits in reducing the risk of diabetic vision loss.

Comprehensive Eye Exams and Early Detection

Because diabetic retinopathy can develop without obvious symptoms, regular eye exams are essential. For many patients, an annual diabetic eye exam is the starting point, but your optometrist may recommend more frequent visits depending on how long you have had diabetes, your blood sugar control, and any retinal findings.

These visits also help us screen for other diabetes-related eye concerns, including glaucoma risk, cataract changes, macular edema, and optic nerve health.
