Once your pupils are fully dilated, Dr. Mathukutty will use a specialized light and lens to examine the back of each eye in detail. This includes a full retina evaluation, optic nerve assessment, and screening for conditions such as diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and retinal detachment. As part of this screening, we also perform an intraocular pressure test to check for elevated eye pressure that may indicate early glaucoma. This is the only part of an eye exam where these structures can be seen clearly.
After your exam, your vision may remain blurry and your eyes sensitive to light for two to four hours. We recommend bringing sunglasses to your appointment and arranging a ride if possible, as driving immediately after dilation can be uncomfortable. Our team will walk you through your results and any recommended treatment or follow-up before you leave.
