We use advanced technology on-site at our Willowbrook office on Cypress Creek Parkway near Willowbrook Mall — including retinal fundus imaging and diagnostic equipment that gives our optometrists a detailed view of your retina and optic nerve without sending you elsewhere.

We are a true family practice. We specialize in care for patients from age 5 and up, including diabetic eye exams, glaucoma specialist evaluations, and routine dilated screenings for the whole family. Personalized care is not a tagline here — our doctors take the time to explain every finding clearly.

We accept most major vision and medical insurance plans. Call 281-477-7811 to confirm your coverage before your visit.

What to Expect at Your Dilated Eye Exam Appointment in Willowbrook

Most patients are in and out in 60 to 90 minutes. Here is exactly what happens at Superior Eye Care from check-in through your exam results.

When you arrive, bring your current glasses or contact lenses, your insurance card, and a list of any medications you take. Let our team know if you have diabetes, a family history of glaucoma, or any eye symptoms or concerns — this helps Dr. Mathukutty prioritize the right areas of your exam.

During your visit, our team will apply dilating eye drops to each eye. These drops take approximately 20 to 30 minutes to fully open your pupils. While you wait, our optometrist will complete other parts of your vision exam — checking your prescription for glasses or contact lenses, measuring intraocular pressure, and reviewing your ocular history.

What We Check — Retina, Optic Nerve, and Eye Disease Screening

Once your pupils are fully dilated, Dr. Mathukutty will use a specialized light and lens to examine the back of each eye in detail. This includes a full retina evaluation, optic nerve assessment, and screening for conditions such as diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and retinal detachment. As part of this screening, we also perform an intraocular pressure test to check for elevated eye pressure that may indicate early glaucoma. This is the only part of an eye exam where these structures can be seen clearly.

After your exam, your vision may remain blurry and your eyes sensitive to light for two to four hours. We recommend bringing sunglasses to your appointment and arranging a ride if possible, as driving immediately after dilation can be uncomfortable. Our team will walk you through your results and any recommended treatment or follow-up before you leave.

Ready to get started? Call us at 281-477-7811 — same-day dilated eye exam appointments are often available at our Willowbrook location.

Exam Frequency Guide

How Often Do You Need a
Dilated Eye Exam?

Most adults with no known risk factors should schedule a dilated eye exam every one to two years. Patients with diabetes, elevated eye pressure, a history of eye disease, or a family history of glaucoma may need to schedule an eye exam annually or more frequently. Our optometric team will advise you on the right schedule for your specific vision needs and health history.
