Contact Lens Fitting in The Woodlands, TX

A contact lens exam is not the same as your regular eye exam. Our optometrists measure your corneal curvature, evaluate your tear film, and fit trial lenses in-office — so your contacts work for your eyes, not just your prescription.

What Is a Contact Lens Fitting ?

Most patients assume their regular eye exam covers everything. It doesn't. A contact lens fitting is a separate evaluation — and skipping it is one of the most common reasons people end up with lenses that are uncomfortable, blurry, or hard to wear.

Standard Eye Exam Checks your vision & eye health Measures refractive error, tests visual acuity, and evaluates overall eye health.
Contact Lens Fitting Matches lenses to your eyes Measures corneal curvature, iris size, tear film — then fits trial lenses to confirm clarity and comfort.

During a contact lens exam, your optometrist measures the curvature of your cornea and the diameter of your iris to determine the correct base curve and lens diameter. If your corneas are irregular — or you have astigmatism or dry eye — the fitting process becomes even more specific.

A proper fitting also includes a tear film evaluation to assess how your eyes retain moisture during contact lens wear. Identifying dryness early helps us select lenses designed to reduce the risk of irritation before it becomes a problem.

After the fitting, you leave with trial lenses and return for a follow-up to confirm comfort in real life. Your final contact lens prescription is written only after that step — because comfort can't be fully assessed in a clinic alone.

What Happens at Your Fitting

Your fitting appointment covers three things:

  • Measurements Corneal curvature, pupil size, and iris diameter — so the lens fits your eye precisely, not just your prescription.
  • Tear film evaluation Checks how well your eyes retain moisture — critical if you have dry eye or wear contacts for long hours.
  • Trial lens fitting We place trial lenses on your eyes in-office to confirm clarity, coverage, and comfort before prescribing.

Personalized Contact Lens Options at Our Woodlands Office

Not every patient needs the same lens. Our doctors select from a full range of contact lens options based on your prescription, lifestyle, and eye health — so what you leave with actually works for you.

Most Common

Soft Contact Lenses

Flexible and easy to adapt to, soft lenses are available as daily disposable, bi-weekly, or monthly options. Daily disposables are often recommended for patients with dry eye or allergies — fresh lenses each day mean no protein buildup.

Best for: myopia, farsightedness
Astigmatism

Toric Lenses

Toric lenses are shaped to correct the irregular corneal curvature that causes astigmatism. The fitting takes extra measurements to confirm the lens orients and stabilizes correctly on your eye throughout the day.

Best for: astigmatism
40+ Patients

Multifocal & Bifocal Lenses

For patients over 40 noticing that near vision is getting harder, multifocal and bifocal lenses correct both near and distance vision in a single lens — so you're not reaching for reading glasses throughout the day.

Best for: presbyopia
Custom Fit

Custom Contact Lenses

For prescriptions that fall outside standard manufacturing parameters, custom contact lenses are available. Your doctor will determine during the fitting evaluation whether custom lenses are the right option for your unique vision needs.

Best for: complex prescriptions

Need Specialty Contacts or Scleral Lenses?

If you have keratoconus, irregular corneas, or a history of failed fittings with standard soft lenses, scleral lenses may provide the clear, comfortable vision that traditional lenses couldn't. These large-diameter rigid lenses vault over the cornea entirely — eliminating the lens-to-cornea friction that causes irritation. Our doctors will let you know during your fitting if specialty contacts are the right fit for your eyes.

Who Needs a Fitting

Who Should Schedule a Contact Lens Fitting ?

You need a dedicated contact lens fitting — not just a prescription update — if any of the following applies to you.

  • You want to wear contact lenses for the first time
  • Your prescription has changed since your last fitting
  • You experience discomfort, blurry vision, or redness with your current lenses
  • You were told you have astigmatism and want to explore toric options
  • Dryness or lens intolerance has made wearing contacts difficult
  • Your near vision is changing and you're over 40
  • You haven't had a fitting evaluation in more than a year

Many patients in The Woodlands and Spring area spend long hours in front of screens. Prolonged screen use increases evaporation and can worsen dryness during contact lens wear. If digital eye strain or dryness is already part of your day, we'll factor that into the lens selection during your fitting.

If you haven't had a full vision check recently, a comprehensive eye exam is typically the recommended starting point before your contact lens fitting.

How Often You Need a Fitting

When to book your next contact lens exam

Every year Standard recommendation for existing contact lens wearers
Any time Prescription changes, new symptoms, or lens discomfort arise
After 40 Near vision shifts often require a new lens type or prescription
First time A dedicated fitting is required before any first-ever contact lens prescription

Heavy screen use affects contact lens comfort

Patients who work long hours at a computer blink less and lose more moisture during the day. Tell your doctor about your screen time during the fitting — it directly affects which lens material and wear schedule we recommend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about contact lens fitting in The Woodlands? Here are the ones our patients ask most often.

Yes — they're separate evaluations. Your annual eye exam checks your prescription and overall eye health. A contact lens fitting goes further, measuring the curvature of your cornea, the size of your iris, and how your tear film handles lens wear. Most vision insurance plans cover both, but they may be billed separately. Call us at (281) 298-5905 and we'll confirm what your plan includes before your appointment.

If your prescription has changed, your lens type has changed, or you've been having comfort problems, a new fitting is worthwhile. Corneal shape can change subtly over time, and a lens that fit well five years ago may not be the best option today. If nothing has changed and your lenses are working well, your doctor may simply update your contact lens prescription at your annual exam.

Yes. Toric contact lenses are designed specifically for astigmatism and are widely available in both soft and rigid gas permeable materials. The fitting takes slightly longer than a standard contact lens exam because your doctor needs to confirm that the lens rotates and stabilizes correctly on your eye throughout the day. Most patients with astigmatism do very well in toric lenses.

Many patients with dry eye can wear contact lenses successfully with the right lens type and proper management. Daily disposable lenses often work better for patients with dryness because there's no protein buildup over time. Our dry eye treatment can also address the underlying condition, which frequently improves contact lens comfort significantly. Mention dryness during your fitting and your doctor will select materials designed to retain moisture throughout the day.

Most vision insurance plans — including VSP and EyeMed — cover or partially cover contact lens exams and fittings as part of an annual vision benefit. Coverage details vary by plan. Our team verifies your benefits before your appointment so you know exactly what's included. Call us at (281) 298-5905 to confirm your coverage before you come in.

Most contact lens fitting appointments at our Woodlands office take between 45 and 60 minutes. If additional testing is needed — for example, significant dry eye or specialty contact lens evaluation — the visit may run a bit longer. We'll give you a clear time estimate when you schedule so you can plan your day.

Scleral lenses are large-diameter rigid lenses that vault over the cornea and rest on the sclera — the white of the eye — rather than sitting directly on the corneal surface. They're prescribed for patients with keratoconus, irregular corneas, or severe dry eye who haven't found success with soft lenses. Your doctor will evaluate during your fitting whether scleral lenses are an appropriate option for your unique vision needs.
