Understanding Dry Eye

What Causes Dry Eyes?

Healthy eyes depend on a stable tear film to keep the surface of the eye smooth, comfortable, and protected. Dry eye develops when your eyes do not produce enough tears or when those tears evaporate too quickly.

One of the most common causes is meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). The meibomian glands are tiny oil-producing glands along the eyelids. Their oil helps keep tears from evaporating. When these glands become blocked or inflamed, the tear film can become unstable and irritation may persist.

Prolonged screen use and reduced blinking
Contact lens wear
Certain medications and health conditions
Hormonal and age-related changes
Eyelid inflammation or blepharitis
Dry or air-conditioned environments
Why identifying the cause matters

Dry eye treatment works best when it addresses the reason your tear film is breaking down. That is why our approach begins with an evaluation rather than simply recommending another over-the-counter eye drop. Dry Eye Symptoms

Common Symptoms of Dry Eye

Dry eye does not always feel like simple dryness. Symptoms can affect comfort, vision, screen use, driving, reading, and contact lens wear.

01

Gritty or Sandy Sensation

Your eyes may feel as though sand, dust, or another small particle is trapped beneath the eyelids.

02

Burning & Redness

Persistent burning, stinging, or redness can occur when the ocular surface becomes irritated and poorly lubricated.

03

Excessive Watery Eyes

Irritated eyes can produce reflex tears. This can make your eyes water even when the underlying problem is dry eye.

04

Fluctuating Blurry Vision

An unstable tear film can temporarily blur vision. Some patients notice that their vision clears briefly after blinking.

05

Eye Fatigue

Reading, computer work, or prolonged visual concentration may leave your eyes feeling tired or uncomfortable.

06

Light Sensitivity

Dry or irritated eyes can become more sensitive to bright indoor lighting, sunlight, or digital screens.

07

Contact Lens Discomfort

Dry eye may make lenses feel uncomfortable sooner in the day or make it difficult to wear them for your usual schedule.

08

Symptoms That Worsen Later

Some patients notice increasing dryness, irritation, or visual fluctuation as the day progresses.

Experiencing several of these symptoms?

A dry eye evaluation can help identify what is disrupting your tear film and which treatment approach may be appropriate.

How We Evaluate & Treat Dry Eye

Effective dry eye treatment starts by understanding what is disrupting your tear film. Our Woodlands and Spring team evaluates the condition of your eyes before recommending a treatment plan.

Step 01

Detailed Dry Eye Evaluation

We look beyond the symptom of dryness to evaluate the structures and tear-film factors that may be contributing to your discomfort.

Tear-film stability assessment
Meibomian gland evaluation
Eyelid and ocular surface examination
Review of symptoms, medications and history

Step 03

Personalized Treatment Plan

Depending on your findings, treatment may combine home care, prescription therapy, and in-office options rather than relying on artificial tears alone.

Prescription or lubricating eye drops
Eyelid hygiene and warm compress therapy
Punctal plugs when appropriate
Specialty contact lens options for severe dryness

Advanced Dry Eye Care

Advanced In-Office Dry Eye Treatment

When routine drops and home care are not enough, your evaluation may show that a more targeted in-office treatment is appropriate for the underlying cause of your dry eye.

Advanced Treatment Option

OptiLight IPL for Chronic Dry Eye

For patients whose dry eye is associated with meibomian gland dysfunction and inflammation, OptiLight IPL may be recommended as part of a targeted treatment plan. The goal is to address contributing factors rather than simply masking symptoms with temporary lubrication.

Designed for targeted in-office dry eye care
May be appropriate for meibomian gland dysfunction
Treatment recommendations are based on your evaluation
Available as part of Superior Eye Care's advanced dry eye care

LipiFlow

Meibomian Gland Treatment Option

LipiFlow is another advanced treatment option available for selected patients when meibomian gland dysfunction is contributing to an unstable tear film. Your eye doctor will determine whether this treatment fits your examination findings and overall dry eye plan.

You may benefit from advanced treatment if:
Artificial tears provide only temporary relief
Dry eye symptoms remain persistent
Meibomian gland dysfunction is identified
Contact lens comfort has become difficult

Not every dry eye patient needs an in-office procedure.

Your evaluation determines which treatment options are appropriate for your specific type of dry eye.

Dry Eye FAQs

Questions About Dry Eye Treatment

Dry eye can behave differently from one person to another. These are some of the questions patients commonly ask before scheduling a dry eye evaluation in The Woodlands and Spring.

Still unsure what your symptoms mean?

A focused evaluation can help determine whether dry eye, tear-film instability, or another eye condition may be contributing to your discomfort.

Schedule a Dry Eye Evaluation
01 Can dry eye be treated permanently?

Dry eye is often a chronic condition, so treatment usually focuses on long-term control rather than promising a permanent cure. The right plan can significantly reduce symptoms and improve comfort, especially when treatment addresses an underlying problem such as meibomian gland dysfunction.

02 Does an optometrist treat dry eye?

Yes. Therapeutic optometrists can evaluate and manage many forms of dry eye, including prescribing appropriate medications and recommending in-office treatment when indicated. Referral to an ophthalmologist may be needed when another eye condition or surgical issue requires specialist care.

03 Can dry eye affect contact lens comfort?

Yes. An unstable tear film can make contact lenses uncomfortable, particularly later in the day. Depending on your examination, your eye doctor may recommend treating the dry eye itself, adjusting your wearing schedule, or evaluating a different lens type or material.

04 Are artificial tears enough for dry eye?

Artificial tears can provide useful temporary lubrication, but they may not address the underlying reason your eyes are dry. If you need drops frequently or continue to experience burning, irritation, watering, or fluctuating vision, a dry eye evaluation may help identify a more targeted approach.

05 How do I know if I need IPL or another advanced treatment?

Advanced treatment is not appropriate for every patient. Your eye doctor first evaluates the tear film, eyelids, ocular surface, and meibomian gland function. If your findings show a condition that may benefit from an in-office treatment such as OptiLight IPL or LipiFlow, those options can then be discussed as part of your treatment plan.

06 Is a dry eye evaluation the same as a regular eye exam?

Not exactly. A routine or comprehensive eye exam evaluates your overall vision and eye health. A dry-eye-focused evaluation places additional attention on the tear film, meibomian glands, eyelids, and ocular surface. Depending on the appointment, these evaluations may sometimes be performed during the same visit.
