Can you get LASIK if you have dry eyes?

Sharon Mathukutty • Jul 15, 2021

Dry eye disease is an eye condition that affects around 6.8 percent of the adult population, approximately 16.4 million people, in the United States. Dry eyes occur when your tear ducts fail to produce the adequate amount of tears required to keep the surface of your eyes well-lubricated. This causes several complications for the patient, ranging from discomfort and irritability to affecting the performance of routine activities, such as reading or driving.

A common question that arises when we talk about dry eyes is whether or not you can get LASIK surgery if you have this condition. Today we're discussing what exactly LASIK entails and the impact that dry eyes can have on your chances of getting this surgery. So, let's get right into it!

What Is Lasik Surgery?

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) surgery is the most famously known and performed laser surgery to correct vision problems. In this surgery, a special laser is used to mold the shape of your cornea to enhance your vision. By having this surgery, you'll no longer need to wear prescription glasses or contact lenses.

What Problems Can It Cure?

Nearsightedness (Myopia)

Nearsightedness is a common condition that occurs when you can clearly see objects near you, but those that are further away appear to be blurry. It happens when your eyeball is a bit too long, or your cornea is curved too sharply, causing light rays to form images in front of your retina instead of on it.

Farsightedness (Hyperopia)

On the other hand, farsightedness is when you can clearly see objects that are further away, but those in front of you are blurred. This occurs when your eyeball is shorter than the average length, or your cornea is too flat, resulting in the light rays forming images behind the retina.

Astigmatism

And finally, astigmatism is an eye condition in which either your cornea or the lens of your eye has mismatched curves. This results in a combination of nearsightedness and farsightedness, causing blurred vision for the patient.

Now that we know the kinds of conditions LASIK surgery can cure, let's get to the main point.

Can You Get Lasik if You Have Dry Eyes?

The answer's simple: if you're interested in LASIK, you'll need to treat your dry eyes before getting the surgery. Whether you're using artificial tears, ointments, or other procedures as recommended to you by your doctor, as long as your dry eye is under control, you can go ahead with getting LASIK. However, if you don't get this condition treated before the surgery, you're likely to experience intense irritation after the surgery. Also, keep in mind that it might flare again after the surgery, so you'll need proper medication and eye care as prescribed by your doctor.
