Importance of Refraction Eye Exam

Why is a Contact Lens Exam Important for Refractive Eye Care?

When it comes to refractive eye care, getting a contact lens exam distinctions is crucial. This specialized exam ensures that your contact lenses fit properly and that your eyes are healthy. It also helps identify any potential issues before they become serious problems, keeping your vision clear and comfortable.

The Refraction Eye Exam Procedure

  1. Preparation:  Your eye doctor will first explain the process to you and answer any questions you may have. You will then be comfortably seated in a chair, and the examination will begin.
  2. Using the Phoropter:  The doctor will have you look into a device known as a phoropter. This fascinating piece of equipment holds a series of different lenses and is an essential tool in determining the best lens strength for your eyes.
  3. Choosing the Right Lens:  As you look through the phoropter, your doctor will switch between various lens strengths. This step is crucial in the examination process as it determines the corrective prescription you may need for glasses or contact lenses.
  4. The Light Test:  During the lens flipping process, the doctor will shine a light into your eye. This aids in evaluating how your eye refracts light with each different lens, helping to pinpoint the lens that provides you with the clearest vision.
  5. Reading the Eye Chart:  About 20 feet in front of you, there will be an eye chart that contains lines of letters of decreasing size. As different lenses are swapped in the phoropter, you will be asked to read out the smallest line of letters you can see clearly. This test measures your visual acuity with each lens and helps your doctor determine which lens strength helps you see the 20/20 line the clearest.
  6. Finalizing Your Prescription:  After testing multiple lens strengths and examining how your eyes respond, your doctor will be able to deduce the most accurate prescription for your eyes.
